Relaxers

Learning about the relaxers you use

A PH strip goes from 0-14. 0-6 being acidic, seven is neutral and 8 through 14 are alkaline. Our hair fits in the acidic range of #5. When using certain types of relaxers (whether over the counter or salon professional) you must realize that the relaxer shoots the PH of hair from 5 to 12.5. (PH  means potential hydrogen)
In this state the hair is swelled and is prone to much damage and breakage if not
properly treated.

There are several types of relaxers:

  • Sodium hydroxide- Same chemical make up as drain cleaners or hair depilatories.
  • Lithium and Potassium hydroxide- Known as "no-lye" or "no mix" relaxers.
  • Guanidine Hydroxide- Sold as  "no lye" or sensative scalp relaxers. Some are also over the counter relaxers and contain two components to be used together.

Note! Although relaxer says "no lye", it is the hydroxide in all these relaxers that permanantly straightens the hair.

For those who use the sensative scalp relaxers, remember that although the relaxer is sensative to the scalp, it is not neccesarily sensative to the hair. The hair shaft swells slightly more (13) than other hydroxide relaxers and with continual usage can cause excessive breaking and drying. It is always important to normalize the hair with proper shampoo, however this process may only neutral the hair to level 7, you must use a
proper conditioner to return hair to its acidic level 5.

Some relaxers come in a no base formula. Using this would keep stylists from having to base the scalp before relaxing the hair. If this is your choice, I recommend that you have around the nape, ear and hairline based for added protection before the application of the relaxer.

* Never recieve a permanent color or bleach directly after relaxers!!

* Do not use hydroxide relaxers with thioglycate relaxers (soft curl permanents)

* Always find a stylist that best suits your needs and is quite familiar with the best products to use on your hair.

* Always recieve at home hair care instructions
